Woebot Health to Retire AI Mental Health App

Woebot Health, the developer of an AI-driven mental health chatbot, has informed users via email that it will be discontinuing its app on June 30.

App Features

The nonprescription digital mental health tool offered content tailored for teenagers, covering topics such as:

  • Media literacy
  • Bullying in school
  • Body image
  • Psychoeducation
Data Management

As reported by Behavioral Health Business, users can download their conversation history until June 30. The company has committed to anonymizing all account data after July 31.

Company Background

Woebot was launched on Facebook Messenger in 2017 and raised $8 million in Series A funding the following year. Key milestones include:

  1. In 2021, it received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for its postpartum depression therapeutic, WB001.
  2. WB001 integrated cognitive behavioral therapy with the chatbot to provide treatment via mobile devices.
  3. In the same year, Woebot secured $90 million in Series C funding, followed by an additional $9.5 million in 2022.
Recent Partnerships

In 2023, Woebot collaborated with:

  • PayrollPlans and Curai Health to offer AI-powered primary care and mental health solutions for small and midsize businesses.
  • Akron Children’s, a nonprofit pediatric healthcare system, to provide mental health support for adolescents aged 13 to 17.

This partnership allowed clinicians in underserved rural areas to recommend Woebot to patients showing signs of depression and anxiety.

Future Collaborations

Looking ahead, Woebot has announced a partnership with Virtua Health in 2024, enabling primary care providers to offer access to Woebot for adults, particularly for those on waitlists for appointments or in conjunction with in-person therapy.
