Veterans can now book external specialty care appointments in real time through direct electronic health record integration.
For decades, referral bottlenecks meant veterans waiting weeks just to secure a date with an off-site specialist. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has begun bypassing phone tag and faxes by linking its scheduling infrastructure directly into private health systems using Epic.
Ending the Fax Machine Era
When veterans need care outside federal facilities, administrative friction routinely delays treatment. Staff often rely on manual calls and physical document transfers to coordinate appointments. By leveraging the External Provider Scheduling platform, VA schedulers can now view private system availability and book appointments in under five minutes.
Real Gains with Scale Limits
Early deployment at Indiana-based Deaconess Health System showed immediate operational relief. The site saw a 30% increase in veteran patient encounters after streamlining booking workflows. Beyond appointment setting, federal military health databases exchanged over 20 million electronic records with Epic-connected networks in a single month.
This is an administrative breakthrough, not an automatic fix for physician shortages. Direct booking reduces friction, but it cannot create open appointment slots where specialist capacity is already saturated. The true clinical payoff depends on whether private health systems join the network at scale.
