Survey Reveals Majority of Brits Unaware of AI in Healthcare

According to a recent survey, over half of the British population (54%) is not aware that artificial intelligence (AI) is being utilized in the healthcare sector. This survey, conducted by J.L. Partners for the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), highlights public skepticism regarding AI’s potential to replace human doctors.

Key Findings from the Survey:
  • Public familiarity with AI increases acceptance of its use in the NHS.
  • AI is already implemented in over 60% of cancer centers and 70% of radiology departments.
  • 76% of individuals who are very familiar with AI feel comfortable with its application in healthcare.
  • Concerns remain about AI making incorrect diagnoses and compromising patient-doctor interactions.
  • Trust in data security is higher when AI is managed by the NHS or local GPs compared to external entities.

Dr. Katharine Halliday, president of the RCR, emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating, “While the public is largely unaware of how AI is being used in the NHS, they recognize its potential. Effectively utilizing AI will be essential to alleviate pressures on the healthcare system, allowing healthcare professionals to dedicate more time to patient care.”

Public Perception of AI in Healthcare:

The survey, which included a nationally representative sample of 1,021 adults in Great Britain, was conducted in December 2024. It revealed that:

  1. 40% of respondents are comfortable with AI in healthcare.
  2. Concerns about data safety and the accuracy of AI diagnoses were prevalent.
  3. 80% of participants support AI’s role in radiology.

Halliday called for a national dialogue on AI in healthcare to enhance public understanding and maximize the benefits for patient care.

Future Directions:

The RCR advocates for a swift and effective rollout of AI technologies in administrative and clinical support roles to ease the burden on healthcare staff. However, a pan-European study conducted in January 2025 indicated that the UK healthcare sector risks lagging behind other European nations in AI adoption.
