Oura Ring Adds Automatic VO2 Max Tracking

Smart rings are expanding beyond sleep monitoring to compete directly with sports watches on endurance metrics.

Smart rings are expanding beyond sleep monitoring to compete directly with sports watches on endurance metrics.

Oura has introduced two cardiovascular features for its Generation 3 and newer smart rings: Cardio Effort and automatic VO2 Max tracking.

The update removes the previous requirement for a manual timed walking test. By adopting established fitness models like Training Impulse, the ring now estimates internal training load continuously throughout the day.

Closing the Feature Gap

This release moves screenless wearables closer to functional parity with dedicated sports watches from Garmin and Apple. It provides long-term cardiovascular analytics to Oura’s 6 million paying members.

Passive estimation lowers the friction of tracking aerobic capacity over time.

Fitness Trends, Not Diagnostics

Optical sensors on the finger offer convenience, but they rely on algorithmic proxies rather than direct metabolic gas analysis. Motion artifacts during high-intensity exercise can still distort heart rate accuracy.

These metrics help consumers gauge general workout strain and recovery trends. However, indirect VO2 Max estimations are not clinical measurements and cannot replace laboratory exercise testing for cardiac evaluations.
