Quick Overview

North Kent College has introduced two assisted living suites at its Tonbridge and Dartford campuses to provide health and social care students, as well as NHS employees, with training in smart technology.

Key Features of the Assisted Living Suites

  • Equipped with monitoring technology to support various care scenarios.
  • Includes a PARO therapeutic robot seal, designed to aid dementia care by improving mood and cognitive function.

Educational Benefits

Mark Andrews, Deputy Executive Principal for Strategy and Curriculum at North Kent College, expressed enthusiasm about the technology, stating:

  • Students will gain access to advanced technology and short courses that enhance their skills in assistive devices.
  • This training positions them as preferred candidates for employers in the care sector.

Project Background

The initiative stems from the government’s Local Skills Improvement Plan, which identified the need for upskilling the health and social care workforce in digital competencies. The project was funded by a grant from the Local Skills Improvement Fund and developed by Automated Spaces, a company specializing in independent living technologies.

Hands-On Experience for Students

Stacie Collings, Assistant Principal (Curriculum) at North Kent College, highlighted the importance of practical training:

  • The suites provide real-life experience for Level 2 and Level 3 learners.
  • Students can earn additional qualifications in assisted living technology, enhancing their employability and understanding of innovative care practices.

Collaboration with NHS Trust

Representatives from Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust visited the suites to assess their potential for training future healthcare professionals. Denise Aspland, Head of Clinical Education at the Trust, noted:

  • The suites offer students a chance to explore how technology can improve patient quality of life.
  • This resource is invaluable for creating a richer learning environment.

Expansion of Assisted Living Suites

Similar assisted living suites have also been established at MidKent College and the East Kent Colleges Group, further enhancing training opportunities across the region.
