FDA Clears AI Breast Cancer Recurrence Tool

Oncologists can now assess breast cancer recurrence risk in hours using routine MRI data rather than waiting weeks for tissue-based genomic testing.

Oncologists can now assess breast cancer recurrence risk in hours using routine MRI data rather than waiting weeks for tissue-based genomic testing.

Standard genomic assays require physical tissue samples and weeks of processing time to determine if a patient needs chemotherapy. The FDA has cleared SimBioSys’s TumorSight Risk, an AI tool that calculates a 0-to-100 recurrence risk score directly from pre-treatment dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI images and basic clinical factors.

Bypassing the Biopsy Wait

The software targets hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative early-stage breast cancer, which accounts for roughly 75% of U.S. cases. By removing the need to ship physical tissue to specialized labs, the tool provides immediate preoperative prognostic insights.

This speed could significantly reduce patient anxiety and streamline surgical planning.

Accuracy Versus Outcomes

Faster scores do not automatically translate to better survival rates. Clearance confirms the tool accurately processes imaging data, but retrospective risk scoring is not proof that relying on AI over traditional tissue testing improves long-term outcomes.

Independent clinical studies must still prove whether using these digital risk scores to guide chemotherapy decisions leads to equivalent or superior patient survival.
