Impending federal deadlines are forcing health plans to automate authorization decisions or face massive administrative backlogs.
The Bottleneck
Physicians lose up to two full business days every week submitting administrative paperwork for patient care approvals. These manual delays stall critical treatments and burn out clinical staff. A new federal mandate, CMS-0057-F, requires health plans to shorten approval decisions to 72 hours for urgent cases and seven days for standard requests by January 2027.
The Technical Shift
Health plans are deploying autonomous AI agents to parse medical charts and match clinical evidence against coverage policies. San Francisco startup ClarityCare raised $16.5 million in Series A funding led by Headline to scale its prior authorization automation platform, Electra. The technology aims to resolve administrative bottlenecks before enforcement begins.
The Operational Catch
Faster processing speed does not guarantee higher approval rates for patients. Automating policy matching reduces labor costs, but without careful algorithmic oversight, automated systems risk scaling systematic denials just as quickly as valid approvals. Health systems must measure whether automated authorization improves care delivery times or simply creates faster digital rejections.
