NHS Expands Radiology Software to Cut Backlogs

Nine NHS trusts are deploying workflow software to accelerate diagnostic scan reporting as radiology shortages intensify.

Nearly one million patients in the UK waited over a month for scan results last year. With a projected consultant radiologist shortfall of 40% by 2028, adding headcount is no longer a viable short-term fix.

Workflow Automation in Action

NHS England is expanding Hexarad’s OptiRad platform across the North East and South Yorkshire. The software routes medical images to available radiologists dynamically, targeting operational bottlenecks rather than replacing clinical interpretation.

Previous deployments yielded a 12% increase in reporting output and reduced turnaround times by 18%. Participating trusts saved approximately £150,000 annually by optimizing existing staff capacity.

Capacity Versus Care

Faster reporting times reduce administrative delays, but workflow software alone cannot eliminate structural staffing deficits. Faster turnaround times do not automatically guarantee improved long-term patient outcomes if underlying clinical capacity remains stretched.

Hospital leaders must distinguish between operational efficiency and clinical expansion. Automated triage streamlines the queue, but sustainable care requires long-term workforce investment alongside software adoption.
