Overview of RescQ Service

A new support service in Essex, utilizing an app, has provided assistance to more than 260 individuals who witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) during its first year of operation.

About the RescQ App

Developed at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre in Basildon Hospital, the RescQ app is designed to support those who witness or respond to cardiac arrests. This includes:

• Performing CPR
• Calling emergency services
• Observing resuscitation attempts

Integration with Emergency Services

The app is integrated into the emergency response system, enabling ambulance clinicians to register bystanders at the scene. Key features include:

• On-scene debriefing for witnesses
• Immediate access to the RescQ website via a secure link

Importance of Bystander Support

Professor Thomas Keeble, founder of RescQ, emphasized the critical role of bystanders in the survival chain during OHCA incidents. He noted that:

“The psychological impact on bystanders, including anxiety and distress, has often been overlooked.”

Feedback from Users

One user shared their experience, stating:

“I kept replaying the scene over and over. I didn’t realize how much it had affected me until I spoke to someone. Having that support made a real difference.”

• Essex & Herts Air Ambulance
• East Anglian Air Ambulance
• Clinicians, psychologists, and survivors

Future Plans

Dr. Uzma Sajjad, the developmental lead for RescQ, stated that as the service enters its second year, there are plans to:

• Expand the service across the wider East of England
• Increase accessibility by sharing educational videos on platforms like YouTube, with multilingual captions
