Quick Overview

PocDoc, a health tech startup, has teamed up with the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership to introduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) screenings in local communities.

Key Features of the Healthy Heart Check

  • App-based technology provides a cholesterol profile, body mass index (BMI) score, heart age estimate, and a 10-year risk assessment for heart attack or stroke.
  • Results from screening tests are available within minutes, along with resources for understanding results and lifestyle advice for heart health improvement.

Implementation Details

  • The Healthy Heart Check was launched on January 6 in West Yorkshire.
  • Initial screenings will take place at locations including Get Set Goal at the University of Huddersfield, Healthy Heart Community Hubs in Wakefield, and Community Pharmacy Independent Prescribing Pathfinder sites.
  • Screenings are targeted at individuals identified as high risk for CVD who meet specific eligibility criteria.

Health Statistics in West Yorkshire

  • Approximately 6% of the adult population in West Yorkshire is affected by CVD.
  • Over 115,000 individuals are at high risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke within the next decade, based on their QRISK scores.

Targeting At-Risk Groups

PocDoc’s Healthy Heart Check has shown effectiveness in reaching various at-risk populations, including:

  • Black or South Asian individuals
  • People with severe mental illness or learning disabilities
  • Individuals living in deprived areas
  • Men aged 40 to 59 and women aged 35 to 55

Statements from Leadership

Emily Turner, CVD clinical lead at West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, emphasized the importance of prevention and accessibility to digital solutions for those at risk. She stated, “This smartphone-based technology helps patients detect potential problems faster and earlier, showcasing our commitment to improving patient outcomes and addressing health inequality.”

Steve Roest, CEO of PocDoc, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “CVD poses a significant health threat, and many cases can be prevented through early diagnosis. This collaboration aims to ensure that those who may have previously been unwilling or unable to access preventative testing can do so within their communities.”

Funding and Future Plans

In December 2024, PocDoc secured £5 million in pre-series A funding, bringing its total pre-A funding to over £10 million, which will support the growth of its platform.
