New 3D Medical Centre Opens in North Bristol

Overview

North Bristol NHS Trust has launched a new 3D Medical Centre dedicated to 3D scanning and printing technology. This facility aims to enhance the creation of custom prosthetics and medical devices.

Location and Purpose

The centre is situated in the Beckspool building in Frenchay and focuses on:

  • Digital planning
  • Design
  • Manufacturing of patient-specific devices and medical models
Innovative Scanning Techniques

Amy Davey, a senior reconstructive scientist at North Bristol, highlighted the advantages of the new scanning technology:

  • Patients can be scanned while in motion, allowing for better-fitting prosthetics.
  • Previously, creating helmets for infants with conditions like plagiocephaly required general anaesthesia to keep them still. Now, 3D scanning allows for free movement during the process.
Support and Applications

The 3D Medical Centre provides scientific and technical support to:

  • North Bristol NHS Trust
  • University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust
  • The South West region and beyond

Additionally, the centre is exploring various applications, including:

  • Creating 3D models to assist surgeons in pre-operative planning.
  • For instance, a model of a damaged kidney can help identify the area to be removed while highlighting critical nerves and blood vessels.
Funding and Equipment

Most of the centre’s equipment has been acquired through generous donations to Southmead Hospital Charity. This funding has enabled the purchase of:

  • Main 3D surface scanner
  • Accompanying software
  • Desktop surface scanner
  • Augmented reality headset
Statements from Leadership

Professor Tim Whittlestone, Chief Medical Officer at North Bristol, expressed his enthusiasm:

“I am delighted that the Bristol 3D Medical Centre is now open and operational. This facility represents a significant advancement in patient care and collaboration between North Bristol and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston.”

Robotic Surgery Milestone

In related news, North Bristol NHS Trust has successfully completed over 9,000 robotic surgeries at Southmead Hospital, showcasing the trust’s commitment to innovative healthcare solutions.
