Mental Health Act Information Now Part of London Care Record

Integration of Mental Health Data

Mental Health Act (MHA) patient information has been incorporated into the London Care Record, as announced by OneLondon.

Overview of the London Care Record

The London Care Record provides a comprehensive view of an individual’s health and care data, utilized by over 100,000 health and care professionals monthly. This system ensures that essential information is accessible at the point of care.

  • Details of medical conditions
  • Test results
  • Medications
  • Allergies
  • Care plans
  • Hospital discharge summaries
Recent Updates

Between December 4 and 10, 2025, information regarding whether a patient is currently detained or has recently been treated under the MHA was added to the record using the eMHA by Thalamos system.

Benefits for Healthcare Professionals

Dr. Peter MacRae, a consultant psychiatrist at East London NHS Foundation Trust, emphasized that having access to patients’ MHA legal status in the London Care Record will:

  1. Provide health professionals with up-to-date information for appropriate care.
  2. Enhance communication among care teams.
  3. Facilitate more efficient MHA processes.

This integration aims to deliver safer, faster care while saving valuable time for frontline staff.

Access to MHA Information

Frontline staff can view summaries of patients’ MHA legal status from participating organizations, which helps them gather more information about the patient’s care and treatment.

Thalamos eMHA Software

The Thalamos eMHA software enables staff to complete MHA documents within electronic patient record systems and electronic prescription management systems.

Comments from Thalamos CEO

Arden Tomison, CEO of Thalamos, noted:

β€œIt’s very common for someone to be asked for their Mental Health Act history repeatedly as they transition between services. Now, professionals can access that information in the London Care Record, allowing for more person-centered conversations.”

He added that this integration connects mental health services with acute hospitals, GPs, and social care in a previously unattainable manner.

Implementation Timeline

The system was introduced at five mental health trusts in London and their partner organizations over the past year, replacing primarily paper-based MHA processes. The East London NHS Foundation Trust began using this solution in the summer of 2024, with other trusts following by April 2025, supported by approximately Β£5 million in NHS England frontline digitization funding.
