Harnessing artificial intelligence for mental well-being of aging populations.
Abstract
We are exposed to AI systems and AI environments in our daily lives through smartphones, voice assistants, virtual assistants, and many other devices. AI interventions offer wholesome solutions owing to their personalization and customization capabilities, which makes them well recognized in the healthcare sector. They have the potential to address problems like loneliness, depression, and cognitive decline, which are very common when we discuss the aging population. All these problems eventually lead to mental ailments that can be significantly challenging in old age. AI systems can help address this gap by identifying the symptoms early and providing individualized support for mental well-being. However, AI systems face trust deficits, privacy concerns, digital exclusion, and cultural prejudices. These challenges become more prominent in areas with high socio-economic and linguistic diversity. The need of the hour is to develop innovative systems that are culturally sensitive, human-centred, and ethically controlled, particularly when catering to the needs of the older population. AI can serve as a fair and efficient tool that effectively complements mental health services for the aging population.
