Overview
Barts Health NHS Trust is set to implement the BadgerNet digital maternity solution in 2026, following a five-year partnership with System C.
Key Features of BadgerNet
- Provides information in multiple languages and easy-read formats for expectant mothers and families.
- Facilitates greater control and understanding during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
- Replaces the current mix of digital and paper-based systems with specific digital records.
Implementation Timeline
- Integration of the BadgerNet system will commence at the end of 2025.
- Official go-live is scheduled for 2026.
System Integration
The BadgerNet system will connect with the existing Oracle Millennium system to maintain consistency in digital processes such as imaging, prescribing, and neonatal care.
Comments from Leadership
Shereen Nimmo, Director of Midwifery at Barts Health NHS Trust, emphasized:
βOur population is richly diverse, and many of the mothers we support face complex challenges. With BadgerNet, weβre enabling safer, joined-up care while empowering families to better understand and engage with their maternity journey.β
Alignment with Regional Initiatives
The rollout supports the Best Start in Life programme led by the North East London Integrated Care Board, aiming to create a fully integrated maternity and neonatal network. This initiative will allow clinicians to access a single, shared record for each mother and baby, regardless of their care location, thereby reducing delays and disparities in care.
Statements from System C
Nick Wilson, Chief Executive at System C, stated:
βWeβre pleased to partner with Barts Health and support its vision for safer, smarter, and more inclusive maternity care. BadgerNet is built to serve clinicians and families in real time, and it will now help meet the needs of one of the most dynamic and diverse populations in the NHS.β
Recent Developments
In February 2025, BadgerNet was connected to the Yorkshire and Humber Care Record and is currently utilized by six integrated care systems in the region. Additionally, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust are also planning to digitize their maternity services with BadgerNet.
