The FDA’s clearance of Stryker’s spatial computing app marks a shift from novelty headset to regulated medical hardware.
For months, spatial computing headsets were dismissed as expensive toys or niche productivity tools. That narrative just dissolved.
The FDA has granted De Novo clearance to Stryker’s SportSuite Vision app. This allows surgeons to use the Apple Vision Pro during live procedures. Duke Health has already completed the first-ever hip arthroscopy using the setup, proving the concept works in a live clinical environment.
The end of monitors
Instead of twisting their necks to look at multiple physical screens, surgeons now see arthroscopic video, CT scans, and anatomical maps floating directly in their field of view. This is about ergonomics and cognitive load. Operating rooms are cluttered with expensive, single-use monitors. Replacing them with a headset simplifies the physical footprint of surgery.
This clearance also proves that consumer tech giants can successfully navigate the rigorous FDA pathway. By partnering with established medical device players like Stryker, Apple bypasses the need to build clinical relationships from scratch. It is a blueprint for how Big Tech integrates into healthcare: let the medical device giants handle the software and regulation, while Apple supplies the hardware.
The adoption hurdle
But do not expect every hospital to buy headsets tomorrow. Sterilization remains a question. While the software is cleared, wrapping a consumer headset in sterile drapes is a clunky workaround. Surgeons must also adapt to a completely virtual interface while holding physical instruments. The headset is no longer just for entertainment, but the practical realities of the sterile field will dictate how fast it spreads.
