A fresh $26 million injection into medical data infrastructure proves that the biggest bottleneck in digital health is no longer collecting patient data, but making sense of its chaos.

Healthcare has a data hoarding problem. Providers are drowning in fragmented medical records, yet clinicians still fly blind during critical patient encounters. The issue is not a lack of digital files, but the proprietary “black boxes” that lock them away.

The Open Source Bet

A new $26 million Series A funding round for Metriport signals a shift toward open-source infrastructure. By replacing legacy interoperability tools, the platform unifies and deduplicates records for major providers like Amazon One Medical and Sollis Health.

This is not just about moving PDFs from point A to point B.

Legacy networks often deliver a disorganized dump of duplicate files. Clinicians waste valuable minutes sorting through redundant lab results and conflicting histories. Cleaning this data at the API level prevents duplicate testing and speeds up treatment.

The AI Horizon

The real battleground is what happens after the data is cleaned. The startup plans to use the capital to build AI-driven record summarization and agentic workflows. The goal is to move from passive retrieval to active clinical assistance, flagging suspected conditions and gaps in care.

But building clinical trust in automated summaries is notoriously difficult. If an AI agent misses a critical allergy buried in a messy PDF, the liability still falls on the provider. The technology must prove it can parse nuance, not just aggregate files.
