Investment Overview
The UK government is allocating Β£237 million to enhance scanning and diagnostic equipment at 36 new and expanded Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) throughout England. This initiative aims to improve patient access to essential diagnostic services.
Key Benefits of the Investment
- Increased NHS diagnostic capacity.
- More care delivered in local community settings.
- Reduction in hospital visits and faster diagnosis.
Details of the Expansion
This funding is part of a broader Β£26 billion annual increase in NHS funding, which has already led to record levels of diagnostic activity. In 2025, the NHS conducted nearly 30 million diagnostic tests, the highest number ever recorded.
New and Improved Facilities
As part of this initiative:
- Four new CDCs will be established in:
- Gorton
- Luton
- Boston
- Bideford
- 32 existing CDCs will undergo expansions and enhancements:
- 17 centres will be physically expanded with new rooms and advanced diagnostic equipment.
- 15 centres will receive targeted improvements, including new clinic rooms and additional services.
Community Diagnostic Centres’ Role
CDCs serve as local hubs providing access to a variety of tests, including:
- MRI scans
- CT scans
- Ultrasound
- Other routine and specialist diagnostic checks
These centres are strategically located in community areas such as high streets and shopping centres, often operating 12 hours a day, seven days a week, to accommodate patients’ schedules.
Statements from Officials
Wes Streeting, Health and Social Care Secretary, emphasized the importance of this investment in ensuring timely diagnoses and treatments, stating:
βThe NHS should fit around peopleβs lives, not require patients to fit their lives around the NHS.β
Professor Stella Vig, National Clinical Director for Elective Care at NHS England, noted that this expansion will significantly enhance patient access to vital diagnostic services.
Conclusion
The government’s commitment to expanding CDCs reflects a long-term strategy to improve healthcare delivery, reduce waiting times, and enhance patient outcomes across England.
