The Dementia Trials Accelerator (DTA) has officially welcomed its first participants into clinics, marking a significant step towards enhancing recruitment for clinical trials focused on dementia.

About the Dementia Trials Accelerator

Initiated by the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) and Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), the DTA aims to:

• Increase participation in late-stage clinical trials for dementia across the UK.
• Extend trials into community settings for greater accessibility.
• Provide access to promising new treatments for a larger group of individuals.

Recruitment Process

The DTA is currently recruiting participants through the REACT cohort, which includes over 15,500 individuals aged 65-75 who were part of a significant epidemiological study conducted by Imperial College London during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants undergo:

1. Cognitive tests
2. Blood sample collection
3. Measurements of height, weight, and blood pressure

These samples are analyzed for biomarkers associated with dementia risk, and suitable candidates are securely stored in a database for clinical trialists to access.

Importance of Increased Participation

Historically, recruiting enough participants for dementia trials has been challenging, often taking up to three years to gather sufficient numbers for a single trial. In contrast, cancer trials typically complete recruitment in about 2.3 years.

In 2024/25, only 173 patients in England were recruited for late-stage dementia drug trials, significantly fewer than for trials related to stroke or cancer.

Future Goals

By early 2027, the DTA aims to have over 10,000 participants ready to engage in future research efforts to combat dementia.

“My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Watching her deteriorate with no prospect of a cure was heartbreaking for the whole family. This is why I feel so strongly about taking part in research.”
