Overview
The Blood Transfusion service at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) has successfully launched Clinisys WinPath, a modern laboratory information management system (LIMS).
Background
- ABUHB has been a long-time user of Clinisys laboratory information management systems.
- The previous LabCentre LIMS had reached its end of life, prompting the upgrade.
- Clinisys collaborated with ABUHB to tailor the latest LIMS version to fit local workflows, leading to the deployment in September 2025.
Key Statements
Stacey Wetherell, the haematology department manager at ABUHB, stated:
- “Clinisys is the leading LIMS in the UK, and we knew that other laboratories were using it with the software that we use to remotely issue and track blood and blood products.”
- “Integration with our tracking system was vital for us, as we serve four hospitals but only test blood transfusion samples at one site.”
- “We now have a modern, robust, and future-proof solution that has been well-received by our staff and is beneficial for our patients.”
Implementation Details
The implementation of Clinisys WinPath involved:
- Development work by Clinisys to ensure compatibility with the Welsh Blood Service’s blood stock order processes.
- Extensive testing, including over 120 separate test scripts, to ensure a smooth go-live.
- A comprehensive training package developed for laboratory staff following Clinisys superuser training.
User Experience
Jennifer Summers, blood transfusion laboratory manager at ABUHB, noted:
- “The go-live was very smooth, thanks to the extensive testing and training.”
- “Staff have adapted well to the new system, which is user-friendly and provides a solid foundation for the future.”
- WinPath’s Windows-based interface offers a modern user experience compared to previous character-based systems.
- User-definable rules enhance flexibility and guide users through various tests and scenarios, improving efficiency and reducing errors.
Future Plans
In February 2025, ABUHB selected Better to implement an electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) system, with plans to go live in February 2026, barring any delays.
